How does local number portability work?
Number portability allows wireless customers to keep their current cell phone numbers when they switch from one wireless carrier to another within the same local service area. You must indicate your wish to transfer an existing number to your new wireless carrier when you submit your order. The number must be a local number within the new carrier's service area. Your current wireless account cannot be canceled or suspended before the operation is complete.
During the check-out process, be sure to click on the box that says "Yes! Switch my old cell phone number to my new phone and plan." You'll need to provide the name of your old carrier and account number. We will run an eligibility check with both the new and existing carrier to determine if you are eligible.
- Landline numbers You can also transfer your home landline number to your new carrier. When porting landline numbers, there are more restrictions on which numbers can be ported. Some local phone companies have been granted waivers or exemptions from meeting the FCC deadlines. Check with your local phone company to make sure you can port your number.
- Check your contract If you want to switch carriers but still have a contract with your current wireless carrier, you will be required to honor your existing contract. The alternative is to pay the early termination fee to your carrier. Review your contract to check on applicable charges or contact your carrier.
- Costs The cost to transfer your number will vary by carrier. Check the rate plan for details.
Note: Do not cancel your old service if you wish to transfer that number to your new wireless carrier. Your old service will automatically be canceled when your request is completed.

When will my number work with my new carrier?
Once your order is approved and ready for activation, the process should take less than twenty-four hours for wireless-to-wireless transfers (a timeframe set by the FCC). Note that during this window, you will be without wireless service, because your old account will be canceled and your new account will not yet be active. For landline-to-wireless moves, the process can take up to 5 days.
